Homes with power for your car

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Earth-friendly consumers looking to drive green electric cars can now have a place to power up their vehicles – in their own garage, at their own electric car charging stations. Home builder KB Homes has announced this month that it is offering as an option to pre-wire its new “Built to Order” homes to accommodate charging stations for electric cars. This option is available nationwide.

To charge any of the new electric vehicles at home, homeowners need something called “Level 2″ charging. “Wheels,” the automobile blog at NYTimes.com, says that to charge a car at home, a wall-mounted 220-240-volt boxes is needed. The boxes can recharge an electric car’s batteries in four to eight hours. The cost and the hardware for such a system would normally cost somewhere between $750 and $2,000 per unit, according to the blog.

Being able to charge up at home no doubt would be a welcome thing for electric car owners – the Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Map created and maintained by the Cleantech Authority shows that in much of the U.S., public car-charging stations can be quite difficult to find.

Energy efficient home improvement can be worth every penny

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Energy saving home improvement projects are fast becoming one of the most popular home improvement undertakings on the market. They aren’t cheap, however. Installing energy efficient furnaces and air conditioners, improving insulation and replacing old windows with more efficient varieties can cost a pretty penny, leaving many homeowners asking themselves whether shelling out all that dough is really worth it.

The answer is yes
It may take a bite out of your savings, or even require you to look into financing to pay for it, but projects like these can be a no-brainer from a financial standpoint. Take the examples above. Installing energy efficient furnaces and air conditioners can cut down on a home’s energy consumption by 50%, and new energy efficient windows can save a homeowner $300-$400 a year. Extend those savings a few years down the road and it’s easy to see that these home improvements can quickly pay for themselves.  (MORE)

Caulk – A Valuable Tool for Home Maintenance

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Via Lennar Corporation (Lennar Corporation):

What is one of the most-used items both during the construction of your Lennar home and after you’ve moved in? If you guessed caulk, you’re correct!

Caulk is an extremely useful substance that has many different purposes. During construction, it is used to seal certain openings, prevent water penetration, and provide a neat finish in various areas - both on the interior and exterior of your new Lennar home. Over time, caulk deteriorates and will need to be repaired or replaced. This is one of the main homeowner maintenance items you will need to be aware as your home ages. Luckily, caulk is relatively inexpensive and easy to apply. (more)

Carbon Monoxide - Must Read Could Save your Life or Someone Else!!!!

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Here is an article from a Realtor, Connie Zulu in Saint Mary’s, ON, that hits home about carbom monoxide poisoning.  In the Winter months we are closing our homes up tight and never thinking about the possible results from carbon monoxide.  Please read!

The story below looks long.  But you will not regret taking the 5 mins. to read it.  What it just may do is save your life?  This is a true story from a girlfriend of mine for more than 20 years.

This is the story of what has happened to me over the last 3 months. The email is long, but I urge you to PLEASE read it. It could save your life or keep you from becoming very, very ill!   Flashback to 3 months ago:   I start feeling ill with dizzy spells and the feeling of coming down with the flu. A couple of weeks go by and I am still feeling this way. One day at work I became confused doing a routine task and decided I better see a doctor because something is just not right. The doctor tells me it sounds like I have hypoglycemia and makes an appointment for me to meet with the dietician. After meeting with the dietician and following her advise a couple weeks go by and I still feel ill all the time. I go back and see my family doctor and I tell him I don’t think I have hypoglycemia. I’m doing everything I should and eating every two hours but I am still sick. He decides he is going to test me for an insulin secreting tumor. The test is done and nobody bothers to call me about it. I call the clinic and they say the test came back normal. Now I have been left hanging…..still sick but nobody offering to do more tests.
